Department of Mechanical Engineering Seminar Series

Deploying Marine Robots in Cold Regions

Mingxi Zhou
Assistant Professor
Graduate School of Oceanography
University of Rhode Island

Abstract
Marine robots, often referred to as uncrewed marine systems, are becoming commonly used for oceanography research and defense missions. This seminar presents the progress on design and operating marine robots in cold regions. The presenter will report the research progress on the state-of-the-art navigation for navigating marine robots in high-latitude regions, present advanced autonomous algorithms for iceberg mapping using a team of marine robots, and introduce the recent work on enabling a portable low-cost underwater robot for exploring the ice-water boundary.

About the speaker
Mingxi Zhou is an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island (URI). He also holds a cross-appointment in the Department of Ocean Engineering at URI. His research is focused on marine robotics, particularly, underwater navigation, online path planning, and new ocean system design. From 2010 to 2018, he was affiliated with the Memorial University of Newfoundland where he obtained his PhD and Master’s degree in 2017 and 2012, and worked as a postdoctoral research fellow from 2017 to 2018 on the autopilot algorithm for underwater gliders.
